What to expect
How quickly a password is recovered depends far more on the format and the password than on anything else:
- Legacy ZipCrypto is fast to search.
- WinZip AES, RAR3, RAR5 and 7-Zip all use deliberately slow key derivation, so strong passwords take much longer and a GPU makes a real difference. Long, truly random passwords on these can be impractical to search exhaustively — we’re honest about that rather than overpromising.
In every case Krylack tries the most likely candidates first, so short and human-chosen passwords are very recoverable.
